Keep Your Mac Hard Drive Clean With CleanMyDrive 2
If like most people your work and personal files are stored in your Mac, the last thing you would want to happen is for it to hang or shut down just when you need it the most. A Mac is a wonderful piece of technological innovation but it is vulnerable to regular wear and tear. If you don’t maintain the overall health of your Mac it could breakdown on you and it could have serious consequences.
In most cases, the problem is simply a matter of too much junk in the Mac’s trunk. Over the years your online activity has accumulated unwanted files, links, apps and widgets that no longer serves any valuable purpose. It’s like your body accumulating unwanted calories due to years of neglect. The excess weight will slow you down and make your perform sluggishly.
The Mac responds in the same way if its storage capacity is approaching its upper limits. It will have a difficult time processing information and performing functions. If this is left unattended, your Mac will eventually just shut down.
But more than just the Mac itself, like most users, you probably use external drives. What you don’t know is that whenever you use these external drives, it also leaves behind files and links that can affect the performance of the Mac. The problem is, it is very difficult to know where these files are.
You probably thought deleting files and emptying the Trash bin were all there was to it. But even that will not totally clean your drives.
This is where CleanMyDrive 2 comes to your rescue. It is an updated version with features a completely redesigned interface.
CleanMyDrive 2 is a compact, lightweight application that resides in the OS X menu bar and monitors free space on your external drives. It basically removes all junk files that the delete function can’t.
Among these are service files created by OS X and Windows. These service files can corrupt the external drive’s compatibility with other devices. Many of these are hidden and cannot be completely removed by the Mac’s default functions. You shouldn’t even count on your Trash bins being totally empty.
CleanMyDrive 2 is designed to carry out 3 specific functions:
- Clean hidden junk from external drives
- Copy files
- Remove volumes of undesired files with a click of the mouse
You will need to give CleanMyDrive 2access to mounted local volumes to by- pass the Mac App Store requirements. Once the app has been downloaded and installed, you will see the icon in the top Menu bar. The application box will show all of the connected drives:
- USB Disk
- Backups Storage
- Digital Camera SD Card
- Disk Image
- Your Mac’s Hard Drive
You can set off the software scan by simply clicking the “Grant Access” button. Content is represented by an assortment of rainbow colors.
Similar to iTunes, CleanMyDrive 2 uses a color scale to display the amount of disk space used. This is a simple but effective way of keeping track of your external drive usage.
If you bring the cursor over any fuel gauge, the color will display the file type whether these are apps, an audio file, movies, photos and at the same time inform you of the amount of space it is eating up. It will also give you an indication of how much free space is still available.
CleanMyDrive 2’s website says it can clean all drives. However, you have to be advised that there are a few exceptions which are Network drives and the Time Machine volumes.
Network drives do not have a fuel gauge and were not included in CleanMyDrive 2’s design while with Time Machine volumes there exists the possibility of backups getting corrupted.
One type of volume that cannot be ejected is the startup disk. Other types of drives have additional options such as automatic cleanup, one- click erase and keep volumes mounted which does not respond to any eject commands.
You can also record a custom shortcut in Preferences or select to eject any connected disk when your Mac goes to sleep. The app shows notifications for each volume mount which can be disabled through the Preferences option. You can also choose an option to prevent or restrict scanning on smaller drives.
A cool feature is CleanMyDrive 2’s ability to copy files and folders faster simply by dragging them instead of using the Finder option alone.
You can also safely remove USB drives from your Mac using CleanYourDrive 2. Located on the right is the Eject button for this. One click and it will allow for safe removal of all external drives. There is also an option for removing all connected drives at once. All you need to do is click “Eject All”.
It’s very important to remove your USB drives safely because if left for a prolonged period of time, its files could get corrupted.
All of the functions discussed so far are free. There is one optional feature which requires an in- app purchase. This is the Change Disk Icon which presents a set of eight pink or mint green icons that cost $3 each.
Many astute users will point out custom icons can easily be pasted into the Get Info window. But for those who have a special affinity for these special custom designs, $3 is not a steep price to pay.
One feature that may annoy some users is the occasional ad from MacPaw for its other products. However, once you dismiss the ad, it will not appear again.
CleanMyDrive 2 is a free and downloadable from the Mac App Store. It is an easy and convenient way to keep your Mac running efficiently and performing in top condition every time you need it. It is proven to be an effective way of purging unwanted files from external drives which you did not know continued to exist.
Don’t take any chances with your Mac. Download CleanMyDrive 2 and keep your drives healthy and functioning properly.
